There have been a lot of questions surrounding Aurum lately, and understandably, many participants want to know what is happening, why these changes are taking place, and what Aurum says we can expect moving forward.
In this blog, Crypto Project Watch will share the latest Aurum updates as we currently understand them. We’ll walk through the timeline of events leading up to where things stand today, discuss what Aurum has communicated about its path forward, and take a closer look at some of the technology upgrades taking place behind the scenes.
We’ll also provide outside educational resources to help explain concepts such as Web3, smart contracts, third-party wallets, and European crypto regulations. Our goal is to separate the technical terminology from the facts and make everything as easy to understand as possible.
Why Did Aurum Begin These Upgrades?
At the beginning of July, Aurum announced that it was upgrading its platform toward a Web3-based structure and communicated that the changes were connected, in part, to European regulatory requirements, including MiCA.
According to Aurum’s communications, the upgraded structure is intended to give participants greater control over their crypto by connecting assets with third-party wallets and using smart contracts to execute certain transactions.
If implemented as described, this represents a significant change from a traditional platform where assets and transactions may be managed primarily through a company-controlled system. A Web3 structure can potentially provide users with greater visibility and control, depending on exactly how the wallets, smart contracts, custody arrangements, and platform are designed.
That distinction is important, and we’ll take a closer look at it throughout this blog.
First, What Is MiCA?
MiCA stands for Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation. It is the European Union’s regulatory framework designed to establish more consistent rules for crypto-assets and crypto-related businesses operating within the EU.
MiCA establishes requirements covering areas such as authorization, transparency, consumer protection, disclosures, and supervision for certain crypto-asset issuers and service providers. It also establishes specific requirements for certain types of stablecoins.
In simple terms, the European Union is creating a clearer regulatory framework for the crypto industry so companies understand the rules they need to follow and consumers receive greater protections.
However, it is important to understand that simply using Web3 technology or smart contracts does not automatically make a company MiCA compliant. Regulatory compliance depends on the specific services a company provides, where and how it operates, and whether it meets the applicable regulatory and authorization requirements.
With that foundation in place, let’s look at what happened with Aurum, why the platform went through these changes, where things currently stand, and what Aurum says comes next.
July 20: Aurum Begins the Web3 Upgrade
On July 20, Aurum began implementing its Web3 upgrade to the existing platform. As part of this transition, users were asked to connect a Web3-compatible third-party wallet, such as Ledger or Tangem, to their Aurum account. According to Aurum, this change was designed to support the platform’s move toward smart-contract functionality and a new process for handling withdrawals.
During the upgrade, withdrawal requests that were already pending were canceled, and the corresponding balances were returned to users’ main Aurum balances. Users were then instructed to connect their compatible wallets and submit their withdrawal requests again using the updated system.
From what Crypto Project Watch observed and from the information available to us at the time, this portion of the transition appeared to go smoothly, and the platform continued to operate normally.
Once the new withdrawal requests were submitted, they entered Aurum’s standard 96-hour pending withdrawal period. At this point in the timeline, users were waiting for that period to be completed and for the newly submitted withdrawals to be processed.
This is an important point in the timeline because the next events would begin to raise questions about the upgrade, the withdrawal process, and what was happening behind the scenes as Aurum continued its transition to the new system.
What Is Web3 and How Is It Used in Crypto?
Web3 is a newer way of using the internet that gives people more control over their money, digital assets, and online activity.
The easiest way to understand Web3 is to look at how the internet has changed.
Web1 – The Internet You Could ReadIn the early days of the internet, most websites were simply pages you visited to read information. There wasn't much interaction.
Web2 – The Internet We Use TodayWeb2 brought us social media, online shopping, banking apps, YouTube, Facebook, and other interactive services. We can create content and communicate with people, but large companies usually control the websites, accounts, and data.
Web3 – The Internet You Can Own and Participate InWeb3 introduces blockchain technology and digital ownership. Instead of always needing a company or bank in the middle, blockchain networks can allow people to interact directly with each other.
How Does Web3 Work With Crypto?
Cryptocurrency is one of the most important parts of Web3.
Your crypto wallet can act almost like your Web3 account. Instead of creating a traditional username and password for every service, some Web3 applications allow you to connect your wallet.
Your wallet can hold cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC and many other digital assets. It can also interact with blockchain applications.
For example, imagine you have $100 worth of cryptocurrency in your wallet.
With Web3, you may be able to connect that wallet to a decentralized application and:
Swap one cryptocurrency for another.
Send crypto directly to another person's wallet.
Participate in decentralized finance (DeFi).
Stake certain cryptocurrencies to potentially earn rewards.
Buy or sell digital assets.
Use blockchain-based games and applications.
Participate in decentralized communities.
Verify ownership of certain digital assets.
What Are Smart Contracts?
Another important part of Web3 is something called a smart contract.
A smart contract is basically a computer program stored on a blockchain. It automatically follows programmed instructions when certain conditions are met.
For example, a decentralized crypto exchange might use a smart contract to exchange your ETH for another cryptocurrency. Instead of an employee manually approving the transaction, the smart contract performs the transaction according to its programming.
Think of it somewhat like a vending machine.
You put money into a vending machine, select what you want, and the machine automatically follows its programming to give you the product. A smart contract can perform certain digital transactions in a similar automated way.
What Is a DApp?
A DApp, or decentralized application, is an application that uses blockchain technology or smart contracts.
A DApp might look similar to a regular website or app. The big difference is what is happening behind the scenes.
Instead of everything being controlled by one company's database, some or all of the application's functions may operate through a blockchain.
Why Is Web3 Important to Crypto?
One of the main ideas behind Web3 is ownership and control.
With a traditional bank account, the bank maintains the account and controls the system you use to access your money.
With a self-custody crypto wallet, you control the private keys that provide access to your cryptocurrency.
This can provide more independence, but it also creates more responsibility.
If you lose access to your wallet or give your recovery phrase or private keys to a scammer, there may be no bank or customer-service department capable of reversing the transaction.
That's why security and education are extremely important in Web3.
A Simple Example
Imagine you want to exchange Ethereum for USDC.
On a traditional centralized crypto exchange, you might:
Bank → Crypto Exchange → Your Exchange Account → Trade
In Web3, you could potentially:
Your Crypto Wallet → Decentralized Exchange → Smart Contract → USDC Returned to Your Wallet
The transaction happens through blockchain technology without necessarily requiring a traditional bank or centralized exchange to process the trade.
Is Web3 the Same as Crypto?
No.
Crypto is part of Web3, but Web3 is bigger than cryptocurrency.
Web3 can include:
Blockchain + Cryptocurrency + Digital Wallets + Smart Contracts + DeFi + DApps + Digital Ownership
Crypto provides a way to transfer value within many of these systems.
The Most Important Thing to Remember
You don't need to understand complicated computer programming to understand the basic idea behind Web3.
Think of it this way:
Web2 = You use the internet.
Web3 = You can use the internet while also directly owning and controlling digital assets through blockchain technology.
July 22: The Neyro Token Airdrop and Smart Contract Issue
On July 22, Aurum announced the airdrop of its new Neyro Token, a token Aurum described as being directly connected to the upcoming Aurum Exchange, which was expected to become available for trading in the near future.
For those unfamiliar with the term, an airdrop is a method crypto projects can use to distribute tokens directly to users' wallets. Airdrops are commonly used to introduce a new token, encourage participation, build a community of token holders, and increase awareness of a project. Having a token distributed across a larger number of wallets can also provide publicly visible blockchain data showing the number of addresses holding that token. However, the number of wallet addresses holding a token should not, by itself, be considered proof of the number of individual users or the success or value of a project.
On the morning of July 22, the Neyro airdrop became available. To receive the free Neyro Tokens, users were instructed to connect a compatible third-party Web3 wallet to the Aurum platform.
Shortly after the airdrop began, however, a problem occurred involving the smart-contract interaction associated with connected wallets. Users reported funds unexpectedly leaving some of the wallets that had been connected during the process.
Aurum responded to the situation and instructed affected users to use Revoke.cash, a third-party Web3 security tool that allows users to review and revoke token approvals or permissions previously granted to smart contracts.
Based on the experience reported to Crypto Project Watch, affected users following this process saw the missing funds returned or restored within approximately 20 minutes. Because blockchain transactions generally cannot simply be reversed in the same way as a credit-card transaction, it is important to distinguish between revoking a smart-contract approval and the specific mechanism through which funds were ultimately returned.
Following the incident, Aurum informed users that it would revisit the Neyro airdrop at a later time and continue working on the broader Web3 upgrades to the platform.
This incident became an important point in the upgrade timeline. While the immediate issue appeared to be addressed quickly for the users we were aware of, it also demonstrated one of the realities of moving into a Web3 environment: connecting a wallet and approving a smart contract can give that contract significant permissions over certain assets.
This is why users should always review wallet requests carefully, understand what permissions they are granting, and periodically review and revoke permissions they no longer need.
With the Neyro airdrop temporarily put on hold, Aurum's attention returned to completing the Web3 platform upgrades.
July 23–24: Neyro Airdrop Restarts and Withdrawals Move to Web3
On July 23 and 24, Aurum restarted the Neyro Token airdrop after the issues experienced during the initial July 22 release. This time, the airdrop was successfully implemented, and based on the information available to Crypto Project Watch, no significant issues with the Web3 wallet interface were reported during the airdrop process.
This appeared to be a positive step forward. Users were able to connect their compatible third-party wallets and receive the Neyro Token without the problems that had occurred during the first attempt.
July 24: Withdrawals Move to the Web3 System
On July 24, another important change took place. Aurum transitioned the withdrawal process further into its new Web3 system.
Under the updated process, users wishing to initiate a withdrawal were now required to connect their Web3-compatible wallet to the Aurum platform. This was a significant change from the previous withdrawal process and represented another step in Aurum's transition toward its new Web3 infrastructure.
This is also where we began seeing problems with withdrawals through the new Web3 interface.
As users attempted to initiate withdrawals, an error began appearing on the Web3 side of the process, preventing some withdrawal requests from being successfully completed. At this point, the issue appeared to be connected to the new Web3 withdrawal process rather than the Neyro airdrop itself.
This distinction is important. The Neyro airdrop had been restarted successfully, but users were now encountering a separate issue when attempting to use the Web3 system for withdrawals.
At this stage in the timeline, Crypto Project Watch began paying particularly close attention to the withdrawal situation. A platform upgrade can certainly involve technical problems, especially when introducing new wallet and smart-contract functionality. However, the ability of users to withdraw their assets is an important measure of any crypto platform, so withdrawal errors and delays deserve careful attention until they are fully resolved.
The next several days would become especially important as Aurum worked through these issues and communicated with its users about what was causing the withdrawal problems and what needed to happen before normal withdrawals could resume.

July 25: Signs of Progress and a Special Crypto Project Watch Update
By July 25, the information coming out about Aurum appeared to be more positive. After several days of upgrades, changes to the withdrawal process, and issues surrounding the transition to Web3, it looked as though things were beginning to move toward restoration.
Based on the information available at the time, Crypto Project Watch decided that an additional update for the community would be helpful. Crypto Project Watch and the Crypto Project Watch Radio Show therefore scheduled a special broadcast for Monday, July 27, dedicated to discussing the Aurum situation and sharing the latest information we had received.
The purpose of the special broadcast was also to help users prepare for Aurum's transition to Web3. Because the updated system required users to connect a compatible third-party wallet, we wanted participants who did not yet have a Web3 wallet to have time to obtain one and become familiar with how it worked.
Crypto Project Watch also began preparing users for a Web3 wallet setup class scheduled for August 12. The class was intended to help people understand how to properly set up and use compatible wallets, connect them to Web3 applications, and become more comfortable with the security responsibilities that come with controlling their own wallet.
At this point in the timeline, things appeared to be moving in a positive direction. The Neyro airdrop had been restarted, Aurum was continuing its Web3 transition, and the expectation based on the information available to us was that the remaining issues were being addressed and the platform was moving toward restoration.
That was the information Crypto Project Watch had available on July 25 and the reason we made the decision to schedule the special July 27 radio broadcast.
As we would soon learn, however, the situation was not yet fully resolved, and additional developments were still to come.
July 29: Payout Restoration Is Interrupted by a Major Security Incident
By July 29, the outlook once again appeared to be improving. According to communications from Aurum, the Web3 synchronization process had been completed, the payout system was being brought back online, and withdrawals were expected to resume as the platform moved toward normal operations.
However, during the process of bringing the system back online, Aurum reported that it experienced a major security incident involving its backend infrastructure. According to Aurum's explanation of the event, the company moved quickly to contain the situation and limit additional losses, but significant damage had already occurred within portions of the platform's infrastructure.
The situation became even more concerning when problems were reported involving the Web3 smart contracts and third-party wallets connected to the platform. Some users reported that funds were unexpectedly removed from their connected wallets.
Users once again attempted to protect their wallets by using Revoke.cash to remove previously granted smart-contract permissions. Unlike the earlier July 22 incident, however, some affected users reported that revoking permissions did not resolve the problem or recover funds that had already moved.
This is an important distinction. Revoke.cash can revoke permissions that a wallet has granted to a smart contract, but it cannot normally reverse a blockchain transaction that has already been completed. Once assets have been transferred on-chain, additional steps would generally be required to recover or reimburse those assets.
At this point, the situation had become much more serious than the technical issues experienced earlier in the Web3 transition.
According to Aurum, the company made the decision to take much of the Aurum system offline in an effort to secure the platform, contain the incident, and prevent the situation from progressing further. This meant that services that had been preparing to return to normal operation were once again interrupted while Aurum investigated the security event and assessed the damage.
For Aurum participants, July 29 became a major turning point in the timeline. What had appeared earlier in the day to be a return to normal operations had instead developed into a significant security incident involving the platform's backend infrastructure, Web3 components, and potentially connected third-party wallets.
It is also important to be clear about what we know versus what has been reported. Crypto Project Watch was not conducting the technical or forensic investigation into the incident. References to a hack, the cause of the incident, the systems affected, and Aurum's response in this timeline reflect information communicated by Aurum and reports from affected users unless otherwise supported by independent evidence.
From this point forward, the most important questions became: What exactly had been compromised? Were users' connected wallets now secure? What happened to pending withdrawals and account balances? And, most importantly, what was Aurum's plan to secure and restore the platform?
Here is the Bryan Benson Emergency Call re-cap from July 31st.

August 9: Where Aurum Stands Today and the Restoration Strategy
As of August 9, Aurum continues working through the process of bringing the platform and its services back online. During this period, Aurum has held several Zoom calls featuring CEO Bryan Benson and COO Andrew Isaacs, where leadership has discussed both the immediate restoration process and the company's longer-term plans for the Aurum ecosystem.
One of the most important—and perhaps most misunderstood—parts of the current restoration strategy involves withdrawals.
According to Aurum's communications, withdrawals are initially being opened to users at the NEXUS level and above, with relatively small withdrawal limits. Aurum has stated that these restrictions are intended to be temporary and are part of a controlled testing process before withdrawals are made available more broadly.
Why Start With Small Withdrawals?
The easiest way to understand the strategy is to think of it as a controlled test before reopening the entire system.
Instead of immediately allowing every user on the platform to initiate full withdrawals at the same time, Aurum is starting with a smaller group of users and limiting the amount that can be withdrawn.
The idea is fairly straightforward:
Smaller User Group + Smaller Withdrawal Amounts = A More Controlled Testing Environment
According to Aurum, this allows the company to observe the withdrawal process under real-world conditions while limiting the potential exposure if another technical or security problem is discovered.
If these initial withdrawals process successfully and the system operates safely and securely, Aurum has stated that it can then begin expanding withdrawal access to additional users and increasing the permitted withdrawal amounts.
On the other hand, if a problem is discovered during this testing phase, the potential impact should be more limited because fewer users and smaller amounts of cryptocurrency are involved.
Why This Matters
Given what occurred during the July 29 security incident, taking a gradual approach to restoring withdrawals can make technical sense. Bringing a financial system back online after a reported security compromise requires more than simply turning everything back on. Wallet connections, smart contracts, withdrawal processing, security controls, and other infrastructure need to operate correctly together.
However, it is equally important to recognize that limited withdrawals are not the same thing as full restoration of withdrawals.
For Crypto Project Watch, an important milestone will be seeing the withdrawal system successfully progress from this limited testing phase to broader withdrawal access for the entire Aurum user base.
Aurum has communicated that the current restrictions are expected to be short term. We will therefore continue watching for evidence that withdrawals are processing successfully, limits are being increased, additional account levels are receiving access, and ultimately that regular withdrawal functionality is restored for all eligible users.
Where We Are as of August 9
At this point, Aurum's message is that the platform is in a restoration and controlled-testing phase, rather than fully back to normal operations.
There are encouraging signs in the restoration plan, but there are also important steps that still need to be completed. Crypto Project Watch believes it is important to report both sides accurately.
We can explain what Aurum says it is doing and why, while also recognizing that the real test will be whether the restoration strategy works as intended.
The next major milestone to watch is straightforward: Can Aurum successfully process these limited withdrawals safely and consistently, and then expand withdrawal access to the rest of its users?
That is what we will be watching closely as the restoration process continues.
Here is the official communication from Aurum on August 7th,
AURUM Recovery Strategy: A Phased RestartThe recovery process is moving forward through a clear three-phase restart strategy. Instead of bringing all systems back at once, operations will be restored step by step, beginning with partner compensation and gradually expanding to Quantum Alpha and the centralized products.
Phase 1 — Limited Partner Compensation WithdrawalsThe first phase begins with the limited restoration of partner compensation withdrawals.Withdrawals will be available under temporary daily limits based on each partner level. This allows the withdrawal process to restart gradually as the broader recovery continues.
Phase 2 — Quantum Alpha & Partner Compensation RestorationThe second phase will focus on restoring Quantum Alpha for partners who previously activated the product.During the transition period, Quantum Alpha participants are expected to receive temporary projected monthly returns of approximately 2–3%.This phase will also include the restoration of the partner compensation structure associated with Quantum Alpha.
Phase 3 — Centralized ProductsThe third phase will begin as the ongoing technical and security audits of the centralized products are completed.
This includes:
🔵 EX-AI Bot
🔵 EX-AI PRO Bot
🔵 Zeus Bot
🔵 RWA GOLD (XAUT/USDC)
The products will be brought back progressively following completion of the required audits and technical checks. We will continue to keep the community informed as the recovery moves from one phase to the next.
Crypto Project Watch's Current View on Aurum
As of August 9, Crypto Project Watch remains optimistic about Aurum and its recovery, while recognizing that there are still important milestones that need to be completed before the platform can be considered fully restored.
One of the biggest reasons for our continued optimism has been the level of communication from Aurum's leadership team. CEO Bryan Benson, COO Andrew Isaacs, and other members of the team have continued providing updates throughout the restoration process. While we understand that the process may feel extremely slow—especially for participants waiting for access to withdrawals—security investigations, blockchain analysis, smart-contract reviews, testing, and rebuilding infrastructure after a reported security incident can take time.
We've also followed other crypto projects that experienced serious problems or ultimately disappeared. In situations that developed into what are commonly called "rug pulls," communication often stopped, websites disappeared, leadership became unreachable, and users were left with very few answers. Based on what we have observed to date, that is not what we are currently seeing with Aurum. That does not by itself prove that Aurum's recovery will be successful, but we believe it is an important distinction.
Independent Audits and Blockchain Forensics
Another encouraging development is Aurum's stated involvement of outside cybersecurity and blockchain-forensics resources.
Aurum has communicated that Hacken and other third-party blockchain and security professionals have been involved in reviewing aspects of the incident, security, and restoration process. Aurum has also stated that it intends to make findings from both its internal investigation and third-party reviews available.
For Crypto Project Watch, the release of those reports will be an important milestone. Independent findings can potentially provide much greater clarity about what happened, how the incident occurred, what systems or smart contracts were affected, what corrective measures were taken, and whether additional security vulnerabilities remain.
Until those reports are publicly available and independently reviewed, however, we believe it is important to distinguish Aurum's statements about third-party involvement from the final conclusions of those third parties.
What We Have Been Able to Observe
Crypto Project Watch has also reviewed information outside of Aurum's official communications.
Through blockchain information and other communications not officially affiliated with Aurum, we have been able to review wallet addresses and on-chain activity that appear consistent with portions of the timeline and information being communicated by Aurum leadership.
We have also seen outside industry reporting discussing the reported security incident and potential vulnerabilities associated with it.
These pieces of information are encouraging, but they do not replace a complete independent forensic investigation. Blockchain transactions can show where assets moved and when transactions occurred, but determining why those transactions occurred, who controlled particular addresses, and exactly how a security incident happened can require much deeper forensic analysis.
What Happens Next Matters Most
Based on the information currently available to us, Crypto Project Watch remains optimistic that Aurum can move through this restoration process and begin bringing additional services back online.
We expect the next steps to follow the general restoration strategy Aurum leadership has presented: controlled testing, limited withdrawals, verification that those transactions are processing safely, expansion of withdrawal access, increased limits, and ultimately a return to broader platform operations.
But expectations are not guarantees.
The most important evidence will come from what happens next: successful withdrawals, expanded access for users, restored platform functionality, publication of the promised audit and forensic findings, and confirmation that the security issues responsible for the incident have been addressed.
Crypto Project Watch will continue following these developments closely and will update our community as additional information becomes available.
Our position remains the same as it has always been: education first, verify the information, understand the risks, and make your own informed decisions.
Crypto carries risk, and no project should be considered risk-free. Our goal at Crypto Project Watch is not to tell anyone what they should do with their money, but to provide the information and resources needed to better understand what is happening.
As of August 9, we remain optimistic about Aurum—but the next phase of the restoration process will be important, and we will be watching the results closely.
We would also like to share a video resource with you, this was an after call debrief with some of the Aurum builders and leaders. This call was attended by an independent blockchain and web3 consultant who was able to lay out what she see’s and provide some very useful Insite as to what is going on behind the scenes.
